How Often Bloomington Professionals Should Update Their Headshots

Summary

John answers a question he has been getting from Bloomington professionals: how often should you update your headshot? His general rule is about once every three years, though it depends on the person. The trigger to update sooner is any major change in appearance, such as a different haircut, hair color, or significant weight change. He notes that some people change their look dramatically and should refresh their photo when they do, because it is jarring when someone’s headshot no longer matches the person who shows up. Others barely change for years and can wait longer. Beyond the three-year guideline, John adds that wanting better lighting and a more flattering, positive presentation is reason enough to book a new session, which is exactly what Watkins Photography provides.

Answer

I’ve had several professionals in Bloomington, Indiana recently ask me how often they should update their headshots, because apparently no one knows. The short answer is about once every three years, depending on your situation and how often you change your haircut, your hair color, or if you go through some big change. As a general rule, if you go through some monumental, fundamental change in your appearance, you should update your headshot, because when people see the old headshot and then you walk up looking totally different, that’s kind of weird. Some people don’t change that often. I haven’t changed in 15 years, I still look like I’m twelve years old, so I wouldn’t really need to update mine. But if you’re changing a lot, or you just want to look better in better lighting and present yourself in a more positive light, that’s exactly what we do at Watkins Photography.
