Do Headshots Differ by Industry: Doctors, Lawyers, Real Estate, and Corporate?
Summary
John responds to whether he shoots headshots differently depending on industry, such as for doctors, lawyers, business owners, or chefs. His answer is that there does not have to be a difference, but there can be, and it ultimately comes down to what the individual client wants. He stresses that Watkins Photography caters every photo to the person’s preference. Someone who wants a bright, evenly lit, airy and beautiful look can have exactly that, while a more edgy subject like a hardcore chef or a tattoo artist can get a moodier, more dramatic lighting style, like the dramatic light he chose for his own face in the video. The key, he says, is that the client needs to know what they want, because the style is built around their vision rather than a rigid industry template.
Answer
People ask me, what’s the difference in a headshot for a doctor versus a lawyer versus somebody who just owns their own business versus a chef at a restaurant? The answer is, well, there doesn’t really have to be a difference, but there can be, and ultimately it’s all about what you as the person want. That’s the thing about Watkins Photography, we cater every type of photo to whatever it is that you want. So if you wanted super evenly lit, looking beautiful and nice and airy, we can do that. Or if you were some sort of really hardcore, edgy chef, or a tattoo artist, we cater those situations to be more dramatic, kind of like the dramatic lighting that I choose to have on my face right now. This is my choice. So we can cater situations to whatever you want. It’s just that you have to know what you want, that’s the key.
